API Access Research Fundamentals

Purpose

Choose a route to API data on evidence, not ads. Record what a route can do, what it is allowed to do, and how steady it is. Use the capability matrix, the evidence rules, and the comparison worksheet script to keep the work repeatable and auditable.

Workflow

  1. Define the need field by field. List every field a job requires, mark must have or nice to have, and note refresh cadence and retention rules.
  2. Inventory routes. Check official vendor docs first, then first party resellers, then aggregators, then scrape only if terms allow. Record the access path for each vendor.
  3. Collect evidence. Save exact URLs, version headers, sample payloads and pricing tiers. Tag each item A Primary doc or live response, B Status or pricing page, C Vendor blog or third party summary. Never score a must field as pass on C alone.
  4. Build the capability matrix. For every provider and every field, score pass, partial, fail, unknown, or blocker with a link to evidence. Mark unknowns for each must field to follow up.
  5. Price at your usage. Translate plan tiers to your monthly requests and overage pattern. Record fixed fees, included counts and overage unit price.
  6. Check stability signals. Note API version, deprecation window, changelog presence, status page history, and SLA text. Save the link and the clause.
  7. Run a trial probe. Hit the sandbox with auth, one paged list, one error path, one mutation or dry run if offered. Record ETag behavior, pagination style and error bodies.
  8. Score and decide. Use the script to compute a weighted coverage score from known cells, list unknowns and blockers, and print cost projection. If any blocker remains, reject. If unknowns cover must fields, request written answers before buying.

Operating Rules

  1. Field level first. Compare on the exact fields your job consumes.
  2. Terms before features. If redistribution or AI training is not allowed, the route is out.
  3. Evidence graded scoring. Must fields need A or B. C does not count for pass.
  4. Unknowns are not neutral. Unknown on a must field blocks a yes.
  5. Rate limits are real. Record headers, quotas and reset times from docs or a live response.
  6. Stability matters. Prefer a clear version, a published changelog and a named SLA over vague uptime claims.
  7. Keep the review assets. Matrix, evidence log, pricing sheet and the script run log make future swaps fast.
Evidence rule

A, Primary doc or live response. B, official status or pricing page. C, vendor marketing or third party post. Must fields require A or B. C can back nice to have only.

Capability matrix template

Field, Access path, Must or nice, Provider A, evidence link, Provider B, evidence link, Notes.

Comparison worksheet

Store rows with provider criterion weight verdict evidence. Verdict values are pass partial fail unknown blocker. Weight is 1 to 3 for importance. The script computes weighted coverage from known cells and lists unknowns and blockers.
