Launch Tease Campaigns
Purpose
Turn a launch date into weeks of building anticipation: a social teaser arc, a waitlist or beta list that grows itself through referrals, and a launch-day sequence that converts the waiting crowd into first users and first reviews.
Workflow
- Pin the facts. Get the launch date, what is launching, who it is for, and the one problem it solves. Nothing gets teased until these are nailed down.
- Pick the tease arc. Map the pre-launch window (usually 2-4 weeks) into three phases:
- Hint (weeks 3-4): "something is coming" posts. Close-ups, blurred shots, the problem stated without the solution. No product name yet unless the brand carries it.
- Reveal (weeks 2-3): the product named, one feature at a time. Build logs, founder posts about the problem, behind-the-scenes clips.
- Countdown (week 1): scarcity framing (limited seats, units, or access windows), exact launch date/time, influencer and press embargoes lifting. Every teaser should talk about the problem and show progress, never dump the full package at once.
- Stand up the waitlist. A landing page with one job: capture an email in under 3 seconds on a phone. Immediately after signup, show the visitor their position number and a personal referral link. Pre-fill share messages per platform.
- Design the referral mechanic. Pick one engine, not a mix:
- Queue jump (Robinhood-style): each successful referral moves the referrer forward a fixed, specific number of spots. Specific numbers beat vague promises.
- Tiered rewards (Harry's-style): escalating rewards at referral milestones (early access, free tier, founder pricing, physical goods for hardware/CPG).
- Scarcity access (Superhuman-style): invite-only, applications or referrals required. Exclusivity itself becomes the story. Grant access in waves, starting with the top referrers. That rewards loyalty, creates a sharing moment ("I just got in!"), and controls rollout load.
- Run the drip emails. Welcome (position + referral link), progress (you moved up N spots), update (new teaser), leaderboard (top referrers near a reward), launch (your access is live). Every email has one call to action.
- Seed and synchronize launch day. Give 2-3 creators or friendly press early access 1-2 weeks out with a story angle, not a press release. On launch day, post the full story everywhere in the same window: announcement post, demo (under 2 minutes), email to the whole list, and reply to every comment fast.
Output Contract
- A dated teaser calendar: each day, the phase, the post copy or concept, the channel, and the asset needed.
- Waitlist mechanics spec: signup flow, position/referral UX, reward tiers, referral link generation, and the email drip (subject + body per email).
- Launch-day checklist: staged assets, posting order and times, seed contacts briefed, reply staffing, and the one metric that defines success (signups, referrals, or sales).
Operating Rules
- Never invent social proof. Use a real waitlist counter or nothing at all; never fabricate testimonials, user counts, or endorsements. A stalled counter reads worse than none, so only show it if it is growing.
- Referral rewards must be specific and honest: "jump 1,000 spots" works, "move up the list" does not. Do not promise rewards the product cannot deliver.
- Keep the teaser window real. Hinting for more than 4 weeks without substance breeds fatigue; launching with zero teasing wastes the list.
- Measure the viral coefficient (referral signups per existing signup) and iterate on the weakest link in the loop: signup friction, share friction, or reward motivation.
- Teaser copy follows the standing style rules: no em dashes, no hype filler. The anticipation comes from what you show, not from adjectives.
