Run a planned giving program honestly for a small or mid size charity: explain bequests, beneficiary designations, IRA qualified charitable distributions, gift annuities, charitable remainder and lead trusts, donor-advised fund succession, and life insurance in plain language, hold donor conversations that never pressure, document and steward pledged gifts with a working pledge tracker, and refer anything complex to the donor own qualified advisors. Use when someone asks about planned giving, legacy gifts, bequests, gifts in a will, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, QCDs, leaving a charity in an estate plan, starting a legacy society, or tracking planned gift intentions.

Planned Giving

Purpose

Planned giving is the set of gifts a donor arranges now that mostly arrive later: a bequest, a beneficiary form, a life income gift, a trust remainder. The money is slow and the trust required is high, because the donor is putting the charity inside their estate plan, next to family. A program that earns that place honestly will outlast any campaign. A program that pressures an older donor, overstates a tax benefit, or counts a revocable intention as revenue will lose it, and should.

This skill is teaching first. It explains each vehicle in plain language in references/gift-types.md, gives conversation guides with hard stops in references/conversation-guides.md, sets three worked program plans for small organisations in references/program-plans.md, and ships a pledge tracker in bin/pledge_tracker.py that keeps intentions, documentation, and stewardship dates in one auditable sheet.

The ethical frame is the Model Standards of Practice for the Charitable Gift Planner, adopted by the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners and the American Council on Gift Annuities: philanthropic motivation comes first, the donor receives a full and accurate description of any proposed gift, and the gift planner strongly encourages the donor to discuss the gift with independent legal and tax advisors of the donor own choice. That frame is not decoration. It is the operating system for every step below.

Scope note: tax and trust figures here are US rules, verified against IRS sources in October 2026. Tax law and indexed limits change. Confirm current figures before quoting them, and treat every other country as a separate research job.

Workflow

1. Set the guardrails before any donor hears about the program
2. Learn the gift types well enough to teach them

Work through references/gift-types.md until each vehicle can be explained in under a minute with its trade off included. The core set:

If a question goes past plain mechanics into tax effect, drafting, or suitability for a named donor, that is the referral line. Stop there and refer.

3. Find the right donors without targeting vulnerability
4. Hold the conversation

Follow references/conversation-guides.md. The non negotiable shape:

5. Document the intention properly

When a donor states or completes a planned gift, record it the same week:

bash
python3 bin/pledge_tracker.py init pledges.csv
python3 bin/pledge_tracker.py add pledges.csv --donor "Donor Name" --type bequest_residuary --status documented --date 2026-10-20 --documentation "Copy of will clause on file" --next-touch 2027-04-20 --advisor-referred yes --notes "Residuary share, unrestricted, recognition declined"
6. Handle the paperwork that carries legal weight
7. Steward pledged gifts for the long term

Planned gifts are stewarded for years, often decades. The program that forgets a documented donor will eventually be written out of a plan that gets revised.

bash
python3 bin/pledge_tracker.py due pledges.csv
python3 bin/pledge_tracker.py report pledges.csv
8. Report and review like an adult
