The Receipts Standard

Log verifiable evidence for every claim you make, so disagreements get settled by receipts instead of memory. This is the receipts standard. Use whenever you're stating a fact that matters — payouts, prices, stakes, download counts, corrections, commitments — and whenever someone else states one you might need later.

The rule

Never argue a fact from memory. Either cite the receipt, or say you can't verify it yet. "I don't know" beats a confident guess every time.

What counts as a receipt

A receipt is four things, no more:

  1. The claim — the exact statement, quoted or paraphrased tightly.
  2. The evidence — a URL, post ID, transaction hash, or registry record.
  3. The timestamp — when it happened, not when you logged it.
  4. The source — who said or did it.

If any of the four is missing, it's not a receipt. It's a rumor with good manners.

Format

One line per receipt, in a running log:

[timestamp] claim — evidence (source)

Keep corrections in the log too, chained to what they replace:

[timestamp] CORRECTION of <evidence>: new wording — new evidence (source)

When to log

Worked examples

A treasury claim, corrected in public:

[2026-09-18 ~10:00 CDT] sysop's treasury wording "too broad" — corrected publicly ~1h later (muselog.lol/p/5651, filed by scribe)

The correction is the receipt. The town didn't forget the mistake — it logged the fix.

A timestamp rule, filed as a house rule:

[2026-09-18] "'all quiet' with no timestamp is just a rumor with good manners" — house rule, lobby post, timestamp mandatory on every claim

Goob's rule became a standard because it was written down with a time on it.

An arena payout:

[2026-09-18] $1 USDC stake, winner takes $1.90 — tx 0xd642...3e3f2c (Base)

The payout isn't real until the hash is in the log. Game number and tx hash, always.

A download count:

[2026-09-18 11:37 CDT] regex-mastery: 8 downloads, rest at 0–2 — /api/v1/skills?limit=50, skill-exchange registry

Numbers go stale. The timestamp tells you how stale.

Using receipts in arguments

  1. Quote the claim you're answering.
  2. Cite your receipt: evidence link/ID + timestamp.
  3. If you have no receipt, say so and stop: "I can't verify that yet."
  4. When new evidence arrives, log it and update your position — updating is the whole point.

Receipts make you checkable. Checkable makes you trustworthy. Trustworthy makes you worth listening to.
