Direct a short video in a visual style studied from a reference clip: probe the reference and measure its palette, brightness, saturation, and composition grid into a reusable style card, finish the card by watching for materials, texture, layer stack, and what each element does, build every asset for the new piece from real captures of its own subject, cut the picture changes on the word timings of the new narration, and run a review pass that scores the finished render against the card. Use when someone wants a new video to look and behave like a reference they admire, without copying its footage, wording, or creator, and without locking the method to one named style.

Reference Video Style Direction

Purpose

A reference clip can teach a way of looking: which colors carry the piece, what the surfaces feel like, how the frame is divided, what sits in front of what, and what job each visual element does. This skill turns that look into a style card, a short written and measured record that a different video, on a different topic, can be directed against.

The card is the transferable part. It names no creator and assumes no genre. It works for an explainer, a product clip, a lesson, a launch teaser, or a social short, as long as the reference is a real clip you can probe and watch, and the new piece has its own subject, its own narration, and its own assets.

Two boundaries keep the work honest. First, style transfers, content does not: no frames, footage, wording, logos, music, or distinctive artwork from the reference appear in the new piece. Second, assets for the new piece come from real captures of its own subject: photographs you took, screen captures of the real product, scans, or footage you shot. A capture can be cleaned, cropped, and color treated to fit the card. It cannot be a frame lifted from the reference, and it cannot be a stock or generated stand-in presented as the real subject.

For frame-measured cut timing, transition lengths, and easing names, use the sibling skill reference-video-motion-study. This skill covers the look, the layer construction, and the word-timed picture changes. The two cards can sit side by side for one project.

Workflow

1. Fix the scope before studying
2. Probe the reference and build the measured skeleton

Run the bundled probe first:

python3 scripts/style_probe.py analyze reference.mp4 --out study/

It uses ffprobe for size, frame rate, and duration, and the ffmpeg scdet filter for cut detection. The filter scores each frame for scene change as a percentage of maximum change; the documentation puts good threshold values in the 8 to 14 range with a default of 10. The probe writes:

Per segment, the probe measures the midpoint frame: a dominant palette of up to five colors with shares (pixels counted into 16-step color bins on a nearest-neighbour downscale, each bin reported at its average pixel color), mean brightness on a 0 to 255 scale, mean saturation on a 0 to 1 scale, and a 3 by 3 brightness grid. The whole-piece palette in the card is those segment palettes weighted by segment duration.

Rules for trusting the numbers:

3. Finish the card by watching

The probe cannot see materials, intent, or layer jobs. Watch the reference at full size, segment by segment, and fill the rest of the card using references/style-card-template.md:

A filled card from a real study is in references/worked-example.md, with every number taken from an actual probe run.

4. Write the new script and get its word timings
5. Plan the picture changes on the words
python3 scripts/style_probe.py align words.json beats.txt --fps 30 --out cut-plan.csv

It searches for each anchor in order through the word list and writes each beat's start time, start frame at the given frame rate, end time, and duration. The anchor search fails loudly when a phrase is missing or out of order; fix the beats file, never hand-edit the plan.

6. Build every asset from real captures
7. Cut the piece
8. Run the review pass against the card

The review has a machine half and a watching half. Both must pass.

Machine half:

python3 scripts/style_probe.py review study/style-card.json render.mp4 --plan cut-plan.csv --out review/

It re-measures the render and checks three things, writing review.md and review.json, and exiting with code 2 on any failure:

Watching half, using references/review-checklist.md:

Fix failures in the render, not in the card, unless the card was measured or written wrong. When the card itself is wrong, correct it, note the correction and why, and rerun the whole review.

9. Report the direction

Report: the reference studied (duration, frame rate, segment count), the headline card facts (main palette with shares, material line, layer stack in one breath), the new piece (topic, beats, duration), the cut plan source (word timing tool and beat count), the asset count and capture types, and the review verdict from both halves, naming any check that failed and what was done about it. Name anything the detector missed that the eye caught.
