Thought Leadership Ads

Purpose

Paid promotion of a post a person already published under their own name. The advertiser pays for wider distribution. The author keeps the byline, the wording, and the comments. The best known version is LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads. Meta partnership ads work on the same principle for creator and employee posts on Facebook and Instagram.

The format buys reach for a voice people already chose to read. That is also its limit. The advertiser cannot rewrite the post, add a headline, bolt on a call to action button, or swap the image during ad setup on LinkedIn. Selection is the skill. A weak post with budget behind it is a weak post seen by more strangers, under a real person's name.

One trust fact explains why teams try this at all, and it is context, not a promise of results: in the 2024 Edelman and LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Report, which surveyed nearly 3,500 management-level professionals, 73 percent of decision-makers said thought leadership is a more trustworthy basis for judging a company's capabilities than its marketing materials. People weigh a person's argument differently from a company claim. Paid distribution does not create that trust. It can only widen a post that already earned some.

Evidence tiers in this skill: Official means LinkedIn or Meta states it on its own product or help pages. Reported means practitioner datasets and guides agree on it, with named sources in the scratch notes. Everything else is this skill's operating method, labeled as such, and the reader can change the thresholds and keep the structure.

Workflow

1. Confirm the format fits the job
2. Build the candidate pool before touching Campaign Manager
3. Score every candidate, gates first
4. Clear exclusions before permission

Do not request permission, and do not promote, when any of these hold:

5. Get permission through the platform, and record it

LinkedIn, Official setup as summarized from LinkedIn's documentation:

Meta, for partnership ads:

6. Build the campaign around what the format cannot change
7. Measure paid lift against the baseline, honestly

Output Contract

Deliver these, in this order:

  1. Candidate table: author, post link, publish date, organic snapshot values, scorecard total, gate result, verdict.
  2. Exclusion log: each post rejected before scoring, with the exclusion rule that caught it.
  3. Permission record: author, post, platform, approval status and date, scope, term, and any agreement or fee note for non-employees.
  4. Campaign plan per promoted post: platform, objective, audience in plain words, flight dates, total cap and daily budget with the math shown, kill rules, read dates, comment cover owner.
  5. Measurement report per flight: baseline values, paid results, effective click-through rate and effective cost per click where a link exists, author follower change, self-reported mentions, and the closing decision with its reason.
  6. A short note on what the team will ask each author to write next, drawn from what the scorecard showed was missing. This turns one flight into a supply of better posts.
