Polls and Quizzes for Social
Purpose
Turn an interactive post into trustworthy signal instead of noise. Covers four things the brief calls for: poll design that avoids leading answers, quiz formats people actually finish, honest reading of results, and follow-up content built from what the results actually say.
Workflow
- Decide what the poll/quiz is for. One of: engagement (fun, shareable), feedback (content or product decisions), or lead capture (quiz funnel). The purpose controls how rigorous the design needs to be. Engagement polls can be playful; feedback polls must be neutral; funnels must end with a result worth sharing.
- Write the question.
- Test exactly one thing per question. No double-barreled wording ("Do you like our prices and service?" tests two things).
- Keep language neutral: no leading adjectives, no praising or criticizing, no "most people" framing. Bad: "How amazing was the update?" Good: "How would you rate the update?"
- Match the format to the goal: yes/no for binary feedback, rating scales for nuance, multiple choice for preferences.
- On platforms that allow it, randomize answer order or check that a fixed order doesn't favor one option.
- For feedback polls, cover the plausible answers: options must be mutually exclusive and exhaustive, with an "Other" escape hatch where the platform allows it. A poll with no real home for a voter's answer collects noise.
- Fit the platform's constraints.
- X: up to 4 options, short option text (25 chars max per choice per X's poll limits), voters anonymous, votes can't be changed.
- Instagram Stories: 2 options, 24 hours, voters are NOT anonymous (followers see the poster can view who voted).
- TikTok: poll stickers on videos, good for "part 2?" style content decisions and challenges.
- LinkedIn: professional framing, good for industry feedback polls.
- YouTube: community-tab polls between uploads for content ideas. Keep the question short everywhere. One poll per week per account is a healthy ceiling for most audiences.
- For quizzes, design for completion.
- Length: 5-7 questions for quiz funnels (completion drops sharply past 7); 7-10 max for editorial quizzes. Roughly 2-3 minutes of effort.
- Front-load easy questions. The first question should take 2 seconds. Drop-off concentrates early, so don't open with the hard stuff.
- Vary question types (image cards, sliders, toggles beat walls of text) and keep it mobile-friendly: big tap targets, no heavy typing.
- Decide the ending first. People share quizzes that give them something worth showing: a surprising result, a reframing of what they learned, a comparison to others. "A score and a thank you" doesn't travel.
- For funnels: capture email after the last question and before the result, when curiosity is at its peak.
- Launch, then engage. Cross-post to reach the audience where it is, use a visual hook, and post at peak activity times. Answer comments. Follow the poll with a call to talk ("Tell us why you picked that") so votes turn into conversation, not just clicks.
- Read results honestly.
- Report the sample for what it is: followers who chose to vote, not "everyone" or "the public". Say who wasn't counted.
- Always show the denominator. A percentage without a base and a time window is decoration, not data.
- Don't cherry-pick: show the full result set, not just the flattering slice. If the winning option won inside the margin of noise (tiny sample, close split), say so.
- A result with no sample size and no margin of error is noise presented as fact. Treat it that way.
- Correlation is not causation. "Voters who picked X also watched Y" doesn't mean the poll caused the behavior.
- Turn results into follow-up content. Share the outcome publicly (thank voters, show the full numbers), note anything surprising, and say what you're doing with it. The loop, poll results leading to a visible action, is what makes the next poll worth voting in. Full question-bank examples and honesty checklists live in
references/.
Output Contract
- For a poll: the exact question text, options sized to the platform's limits, the purpose (engagement/feedback/funnel), and a follow-up plan (how results get shared and used).
- For a quiz: title, 5-10 questions with answer types, the result design (what each taker gets and why it's shareable), and length rationale.
- For results: the numbers with denominator, sample description, plain-language read with caveats stated, and the follow-up post draft.
Operating Rules
- Never invent poll results, engagement stats, or survey findings. If you haven't run the poll, say so; if you're working from one, cite its sample and source.
- Never write leading questions, even to make engagement polls "more fun". A rigged question teaches the audience your polls are rigged.
- Don't present a self-selected audience (followers, volunteers) as representative of the public.
- Keep quiz length honest: if the ask needs more than 10 questions, break it into parts or cut questions, never cram.
- End every poll with published results. Skipping the results teaches the audience that voting changed nothing.
